From Dependency injection to dependency rejection

In object-oriented design, dependency injection is a well-known design pattern, although it's a complicated solution to the problem of decoupling. Functional programming offers a simpler way. This talk examines dependency injection in object-oriented design, and explains how it's not required (nor desired) in functional programming. You don't need to know Haskell or F# to attend this session; relevant syntax will be explained just-in-time. Object-oriented examples will be in C#.

UXDD: A New Pragmatic Methodology for Domain Modeling and User Experience

Domain-driven design (DDD) is too often mistaken for just having an object-oriented model that mimics the behavior of the business domain. Not that having such a model is wrong or out of place; it’s just that there’s much more than that in DDD. DDD is primarily a method for understanding and managing the complexity of monumentally large and rich domains. In similar situations, a faithful domain model is not just appropriate but a true lifesaver. In all other (more common) situations, the value of DDD lies elsewhere and overall DDD is much closer to the idea of microservices and CQRS than domain modeling and O/RM frameworks. To make its point the workshop is based on four modules. First, it discusses common patterns for implementing the business logic and relates them to data access and layered architectures. It then introduces the value of keeping command and query stacks separated and how the persistence patterns that best fit. Finally, we expand on the DDD patterns of domain analysis (ubiquitous language and bounded context) and reach the territory of microservices and issues and opportunities available there.

C# Internals

In this session, we will explore C# and look for its hidden gems. C# as a language has long history and there are interesting architectural decisions and tradeoffs.  Some of these gems are useful, other bits explain possible performance degradation of the application at runtime, and some give you additional ways to solve existing problems. I Have a Microservices Architecture and I Didn't Know

Microservices are vertical slices of functionality independent from one another in terms of technologies, paradigms and to some extent also data. As it is an isolated module, a microservice can be easily replaced or entirely rewritten or just scaled horizontally without the risk of regression in case of need. Multiple microservices interact in a loosely coupled manner participating to a distributed architecture but being fully usable on their own. Honestly, this design has very few cons and quite a few pros. And more importantly, it is much more common than expected. It’s simply the name given to all running solutions that for some reasons are not falling in the realm of well-architected, comprehensive systems. Nearly any system is a collection of microservices. In this talk, I’ll share some painful personal experience that resulted from the building of the infrastructure for a company in multiple steps, with limited resources, adding—like a family would do—one piece after the next trying not to lose track of the existing. Come and hear how to rename and leverage the mess you have around to take some concrete functional benefits.

Prism and Xamarin Forms: create cross-platform applications using the MVVM pattern in a simpler way

The MVVM pattern is a widely used architectural patterns that makes easier for developers to separate the business logic of an application from the user interface, allowing to create applications that are easier to test and maintain over time. However, when it comes to create a new project, there are some challenges to face: we need to setup every time the required infrastructure, we need to understand how to handle scenarios that in an application written without using the pattern are apparently simpler to manage, etc. In this session we're going to see how Prism, an open source framework driven by the Community, can help to deliver better and faster a Xamarin Forms application built with the MVVM pattern, by allowing developers to focus on the core of the project rather than on the implementation of the pattern.

Preventing attacks in ASP.NET Core

Let's evaluate new Microsoft web-framework from security perspective. ASP.NET Core is the continuation of ASP.NET platform and, compared to its predecessor, the code of ASP.NET Core is open and suppeorted by community. Framework architecture changed a lot, new security features were added, some old ones were refactored.
In the talk we will go through main differences and see the work of new security mechanism against XSS and CSRF, evaluate what cryptographic features are available in vanilla version of framework, how it works with session management mechanisms. The talk will be interesting for those who does security review of .NET projects or writes secure ASP.NET applications.

Functional Fullstack Development with F#

.NET is not just about C#, web development is not just about ASP.NET, and F# can be used not only for financial calculations. F# is language of vast usage and can be used, for example, in web development.
In his talk Serhiy will show how easily use Suave for writing web servers, Fable for creating new browser applications, Docker for running all this and deploying into Cloud. And all this can be done with F# only. All used tools and libraries are free, all code will be available for participants after the talk. Knowledge of F# is not required.

DevOps best practices for Developers

During my speech I will talk about some DevOps practices, but from Developers' point of view. Usually all engineers come to DevOps having several years of IT-Pro experience. But it's not like there is no room for Developers there. Developers are usually too busy with solving "yet another urgent critical issue of the day", so they have no time to even have a quick peek at DevOps area. In my opinion DevOps is about common sense at first, and being more productive at second. If you are a Developer, you have common sense and want to be more productive as a team member - join my session.

Applying Machine Learning to classify Performance Tests results

In this talk we will do a review of basic Machine Learning (ML) applications and algorithms then take a look at example of applying ML in practice - classifying outputs provided by Performance Test Framework we use internally at Unity to find regressions/improvements, unstable tests and so on. Will discuss lessons we learned while building this project and ways to debug/optimize ML algorithms.

Special aspects of architecture building and application development in the healthcare domain

In this talk we will take a closer look at software development for healthcare domain. Obviously this area is a highly regulated one and healthcare software development requires approaches different from those used in other domains. For example agile approaches being a mainstream in software development cannot be used as-is for healthcare projects. Similarly regulation affects other aspects of software development such as testing, documentation, etc.
Later in this talk we will discuss what challenges developers might meet when working on healthcare projects . Rendering a 3D design in CAD application requires a solid experience in 3D graphics programming, developing algorithms interacting with 3D models requires a good knowledge of algorithms and data structures. These examples are there to show what makes healthcare an interesting domain to develop software for.

Marten as Document Db for .NET applications

In a relational DBMS, we must define a schema before adding data to a database but sometimes we need to store and (that is more important) query semi-structured data. Also, it could be very handy if we could use the same interface to access both structured and semi-structured data. The session will describe how to use Marten and JSONP to build IQueryable document storage and compare this approach with other ways to store and search documents for .NET applications.

Architecting & Development of .NET Core Apps

During this talk, we will review the basic principles and best practices for creating flexible and scalable applications based on Microsoft .NET Core in conjunction with Microsoft Azure services. Next, we will take a look at a number of useful approaches, tools and libraries that will simplify development, configuration and deployment processes greatly. And finally, we will check the main pitfalls that a .Net Core user can encounter and consider recommendations for solving problems.
